Set within a 90-foot-wide basin with a sandy limestone bottom, it reaches depths of 12 feet, with a cavernous vent on the east side leading to an extensive underwater cave system. Surrounded by cypress and hardwood trees, it’s a prime spot for swimming, snorkeling, and cavern diving, with two access platforms along the south shore. Located within the 200-acre park, it’s easily reachable from the main entrance off NE 60th Ave. Crowds swell on summer weekends and holidays like Labor Day, especially with divers and college groups—arrive early to beat the rush. For a quieter visit, try weekdays in spring (April-May) or fall (October-November), when the water sparkles under calmer conditions. Alcohol permitted only at campsites. Some areas may not be accessible for visitors with disabilities. Give them a call before visiting to check for the latest accommodations. Water clarity is often “air clear” but can muddy when the Santa Fe River backflows during high water levels. Check conditions in advance, as clarity is best during dry periods with stable water levels.
